Week 5 - Let’r Burn
My husband finally got his music program to work so he could give me the song for this week. The song I really wanted to post is going to have to wait because it is brand new and the tweaks are still being worked out. Sometimes that can drag out for a while. And then there’s the actual recording of the song. I sometimes forget that my husband not only spends countless hours writing a song, he then has to learn to play and sing it well enough to record it. Maybe in a few weeks. We’ll see.
I asked about the last song, Rusty Red Wagon , and it turns out there’s really nothing exciting about the creation of it. It was one of those songs that came as a melody first and then over a couple of weeks the lyrics came. Even though there’s no real story behind it, I still find it fascinating that he can create something like that out of nothing.
Well, let’s get to it. This week’s song is called Let’r Burn. Here it is…
John Deere poppin’ throuth a cotton field years ago
Ridin’ on my daddy’s lap only six years old
Cotton bale burnin’, on fire on the edge of the field
"Look over there Daddy. Whatta we do?" I yelled
“Son”, he said, “One thing ‘bout cotton you’ll learn
Let ‘r burn”
Chorus
Cause a little bit of fire ain’t much of a bother
But some you’ll find just keep gettin’ hotter (uh huh)
Sometimes it just ain’t worth the trouble
Like Nero playin’ a song on his fiddle
While Rome burned down to smolderin’ rubble (uh huh)
Sometimes it just ain’t worth the cryin’
Might as well stand back and let fate have it’s turn
Let ’r burn
Headin’ into town, me and Daddy in the old Ford truck
On the side of road was a man with trouble enough
Cadillac burnin’, fire comin’ out of the hood
Hewas slappin’ with his coat but it really not doin’ much good
Daddy said, "Man, get back ‘fore you get burned.
Let’r burn"
Chorus
My grown son called me the other day a little upset
Said, "Daddy it’s bad. She’s mad and a throwin’ a fit
Tried perfume, jewelry, sweet talk and roses, too
I’ve tried everything I know, what can I do"
"Son" I said "one thing about a woman you’ll learn
Everything’s just fine
Just give her time
Just let’r burn"
Chorus
Good melody and I love the close harmonies. Not sure I can identify with the lyrics, this time, though!! It has a fun rhythm and great harmonies. Keep sending the songs!! God bless you.
I like the melody. Don’t care for the lyrics. The chorus lyrics seem out of place with the setting. (how many farmers talk about Nero and Rome while working the cotton fields? )
The part about how to handle the upset wife/girlfriend just strikes me as….I don’t know exactly what to say. Negative? Offensive? Dismissive of whatever might be going on with the woman? Like, there is nothing serious enough going on that won’t be fixed on it’s own by ignoring her?…..
So, I’d have to say that guys who are inclined to roll their eyes at women and ignore them might like it, but as a woman I don’t. Sorry.
i LOOOVVVEEED the fiddle part in this song.
really cool stuff.
uhm…as far as the lyrics….yes i agree with Dollymama the thing about nero and rome…
(really…..did they even have fiddles back then?) maybe a lyre….or….a twisted version of the chinese mandolin.
oh well….
this song smelled of redneck…
because they have this twisted comparison between hay bales, cars, cows and women…
especialy the cows and women…..
and the john deere tractor…
sorry..not trying to pop your bubble… i just went a little far with my constructive criticism.
Cute, clever, and maybe a little (unintentionally) misogynistic?
Ahh, well. The Martians will love it, no doubt, but the Venusians may get mad enough to “throw a fit.”
‘Cause that’s what we DO, apparently. :o/
Dollymama, Darksmith, Caroline… Get back to sweepin’ the kitchen and stop leavin’ such intelligent comments.
LOL @ the other comments!

I like the music, though it seems to me that the vocals aren’t really clear enough… maybe the music is just too distracting/over-powering for the vocals, especially on the chorus… just my thoughts.
In defense of the guy in the last stanza, he does say he tried everything he could think of (roses, sweet talk, etc.) before deciding to just let her “get over it”, but then the chorus pipes in with “Sometimes it just ain’t worth the trouble”…
So, yeah… not a favorite.
I also liked the melody & agree with Darksmith 45…LOVED the fiddle. The lyrics…well, I’ve got to say they aren’t my favorite. Sorry
Have you decided to stick with just 1 song a week?? Monday to Monday is a long time…LOL
You may know this already but many historians credit Nero with starting the fire that burned Rome to a “smolderin’ rubble” in order to further eradicate the Christian community, which lived in the poorer sections of Rome - the ones that burned. The picture of Nero “playin’ his fiddle” during that event is disturbing and there is no comparison to just letting something be that you have no control over.
I liked the music, not enough to get past the lyrics though.
I really like the music of this song-the tune, the fiddle, etc.
But I don’t even get the lyrics-the comparisons seem really strange to me-out of context perhaps?
I think what you meant is that some people need to have a melt down once in a while-and that nothing can, or even should try to stop that. That maybe a woman just needs to have a good cry sometimes? Is that what you meant to say? If that is what you were trying to say, well, target missed.
But keep that tune-change the words. Even the concept is sound to a point. Some people truely do just need to work something through and nothing but working it through really can stop it.
And Wendy does have a point-sort of like making hitler a hero……not sure you really want to envoke that.
Hey Songwriters Wife~
I’m just responding to a note you left on my website regarding my song Dead Horse Trampoline. Thanks for all your kind words. I want to send some kind words back atcha~
What a great idea for a blog! You already have a ton of great content. You’re husband definately knows his way around a song.
I will return to this website when I have more time and give the tunes a more thoughtful listen. I’m really enjoying all that banjo! Keep up the great work and thanks again. I’ll be back!
